The Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) course is a 4-9 week program that is designed for students who have expressed an interest in entry level phlebotomy. This course, approved by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), will train and authorizes you to do skin puncture and venipuncture blood collection. You will receive 40 hours of theory instruction and will be required to complete at minimum 40 hours of clinical externship at a clinical site under supervision. Graduates of the program meet the state requirements to be eligible to take the national certification examination. After completing the CPT program and successfully passing the national certification test, the student is issued a national Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) certificate. Student must apply for licensing in the state they will be practicing and a subject to additional fees.
Applicants must complete and submit an enrollment agreement to VTI for consideration.

After completing the theory portion, students are required to complete a 40-hour externship at an affiliated clinical site. Externship schedules are dependent on site availability and are generally held during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The externship must be completed within 1-4 weeks following the conclusion of the theory portion.
Specific dates and times for the externship will be coordinated based on clinical site schedules and student availability. Students must complete the clinical externship within this designated time frame to successfully finish the program. Students are sent to one of the following sites::
- Ventura County Medical Center (Ventura, CA)
- Las Islas Clinic (Oxnard, CA)
Students accepted into the Certified Phlebotomy Technician training program will be notified in person or via phone or email. Applicants accepted into the Certified Phlebotomy Technician program must submit the following: health and physical form, immunizations record including COVID vaccination and TB test. The applicant must not have any communicable diseases, infections, psychological disorders and other conditions that would prevent the successful performance of the responsibilities and tasks required in the education and training.
